General summary and objectives of the role:
| The role of the Technical Writer for Technical Publications requires a passionate commitment to consistency, clarity, and the willingness to act as a strong advocate for the users of the product documents. It also requires an ability to be a productive participant of the development team for software/hardware products and the ability to meet deadlines and function successfully in a fast-paced environment with frequent deadlines. Emerson Network Power’s Technical Publications department produces technical documentation for internal and external customers, which includes engineers, software developers, and system integrators. |
Formal education/knowledge/experience and training needed to perform the role:
| REQUIRED: · A good to excellent university degree in Technical Writing or a related subject (Engineering, Computer Science). · English to native-speaker standard. · Strong communication skills. · 4 to 7 years of experience in professional technical communication. · 1 to 2 years of experience in managing, mentoring, and monitoring a technical documentation team. · Experience of working in globally spread team. · Experience documenting computer hardware and software for original equipment manufacturers. · Experience using professional publication tools, such as Structured FrameMaker, XMetaL, and CorelDraw. DESIRED: · Knowledge of networking and UNIX/Linux Operating Systems. · Experience documenting networks and networking technologies. · Knowledge of Information Mapping concepts. · Experience with structured authoring (SGML or XML). |
Main job duties and responsibilities:
| · Reviews and revises information products to improve information based on customer reports and/or feedback. · Collaborates with engineering, marketing, and support personnel to determine technical information requirements based on design documents, task analysis, engineering specifications, and source code. · Creates information plans to communicate information requirements, schedules, and needed resources. · Tracks progress of the team and reports project status to the documentation manager at other site. |
Secondary job duties and responsibilities:
| · Develops documentation to company standards and to appropriate audience skill level. · Gathers and acts on customer feedback to improve documentation. · Works with minimal supervision. · Identifies art requirements and coordinates illustration. |
